President Donald Trump and House Republican leaders are stepping up pressure on the Senate to adopt the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping tax-and-spending package that they hope to send to the White House by the Fourth of July. Speaker Mike Johnson and the administration describe the legislation as the cornerstone of Trump’s economic agenda.
Supporters say the measure would deliver the largest tax cut for working- and middle-class Americans in U.S. history, including a 15% across-the-board reduction in individual rates, permanent extension of earlier Trump-era cuts and removal of taxes on tips, overtime pay and Social Security benefits. Republican estimates put the average household’s annual tax savings at roughly $10,000, with projections ranging from $7,800 to $13,300.
The bill’s backers contend it is fiscally balanced through $1.6 trillion in spending reductions. Savings would come from rolling back clean-energy programs that Trump labels the “Green New Scam,” trimming nutrition assistance and other domestic initiatives, and paring future discretionary outlays. One outside analysis cited by critics calculates $295 billion in cuts to food-stamp benefits that could affect as many as 3.2 million recipients.
In addition to the tax changes, the proposal earmarks more than $150 billion for border security and immigration enforcement, increases military and law-enforcement funding, and offers $3.8 billion in new income support and tax relief for farmers while updating crop reference prices. The administration says the package will spur investment, make the United States an artificial-intelligence hub and bolster small businesses.
Democrats argue the legislation represents an unprecedented transfer of wealth to corporations and high-income households at the expense of Medicaid, student aid and other social programs. While House Republicans say they have completed their work on the measure, the Democratic-controlled Senate has yet to schedule a vote, leaving the timeline for final passage uncertain.
