Trump Signs Sweeping Tax Cut Bill After 51–50 Senate Tie-Break

President Donald Trump on Independence Day signed into law a sweeping package of tax reductions and spending cuts during a White House picnic that featured a B-2 bomber flyover. Trump has branded the measure the “big, beautiful bill,” saying it cements the tax changes he first enacted in 2017.

The legislation narrowly cleared Congress earlier in the week, passing the Senate 51–50 after Vice President JD Vance broke a tie and the House 218–214 in a largely party-line vote. It makes the 2017 tax cuts permanent, introduces new breaks on tips and overtime pay, and boosts military funding while tightening immigration enforcement.

To offset some costs, the law trims Medicaid and food-stamp spending by an estimated $1.2 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office projects the package will add about $3.3 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade and leave roughly 11.8 million more people without health insurance.

Republicans hailed the statute as the largest tax cut in U.S. history, while Democrats condemned it as a windfall for the wealthy that will erode the social safety net. The White House plans additional events to highlight the law before the 2026 midterm elections, underscoring its central role in Trump’s second-term economic agenda.
