President Donald Trump on 4 July 2025 signed the Invest America Act, a provision within the broader “One Big Beautiful Bill,” creating a government-funded investment account for every child born in the United States between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2028. The law directs the Treasury to deposit a one-time $1,000 contribution into each account, which will be invested in a low-cost fund tracking the S&P 500.
The accounts are tax-deferred and scheduled to open on 4 July 2026, coinciding with the nation’s 250th anniversary. Parents, relatives and other private parties will be allowed to add up to $5,000 annually, also on a tax-advantaged basis, until the child reaches adulthood. Supporters say the structure is designed to harness the power of long-term compounding and give all families—even those with limited means—a foothold in the equity market.
Backers of the legislation, including corporate leaders and Republicans in Congress, hailed the measure as a “pro-family” policy that promotes an ownership society and expands access to capital markets. They contend the initiative will help close wealth gaps by ensuring every newborn has an investment from day one and a potential source of funds for education, homeownership or entrepreneurship later in life.
