Former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said they support a new “Make American Elections Great Again” bill that would compel the U.S. Census Bureau to conduct a fresh population count limited to American citizens before the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump told an audience, “We love it,” while DeSantis added that state legislatures would be “ready to re-draw the lines” once the new figures are available. The pair argued the move is needed to ensure congressional districts are “fairly proportioned” and to prevent non-citizens from influencing apportionment.
If enacted, the measure would break with the traditional decennial schedule of the national census and could reshape the distribution of House seats ahead of the next federal election cycle.
