TikTok Warns E-Commerce Staff of Wednesday Layoffs Amid Continued Restructuring

TikTok has warned employees in its global e-commerce operation that it will announce “organizational and personnel changes” on Wednesday morning, according to an internal memo seen by Business Insider. Staff across the TikTok Shop unit, which sells goods directly through the video app, have been told to prepare for possible layoffs.

The message follows several rounds of job cuts earlier this year and cites a month-long review of how to make the business more efficient for long-term growth. TikTok’s U.S. e-commerce arm missed its 2024 performance targets, and leaders have been importing managers from China and Singapore as they overhaul the team.

The division’s difficulties have deepened since the United States imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese imports in April, driving up costs for many of the sellers that stock TikTok Shop. Business Insider reported that weekly U.S. order volume fell in mid-May compared with mid-April.

ByteDance’s latest restructuring comes as it negotiates with the Trump administration over a 2024 law requiring it to sell TikTok’s U.S. assets or face a potential ban. The White House has delayed enforcement several times, prolonging uncertainty for the app’s roughly 7,000 U.S. employees. TikTok declined to comment on the planned announcement.
