House Sends Trump’s $4.5 Trillion Tax Bill to His Desk

The US House of Representatives narrowly approved President Donald Trump’s signature second-term tax and spending package, voting 218–214 to advance the $4.5 trillion measure to the White House for his signature. Two Republicans joined all Democrats in opposition after an overnight lobbying push by GOP leaders and the president to secure the final votes before the self-imposed 4 July deadline.

The 887-page legislation would permanently extend and expand the 2017 tax cuts, allowing deductions for tips, overtime pay and offering a $6,000 break to most seniors earning under $75,000. To offset part of the revenue loss, it slashes $1.2 trillion from Medicaid and food-assistance programmes by imposing new work rules and curtails clean-energy tax credits. The Congressional Budget Office projects the bill will swell the federal deficit by $3.3 trillion over ten years and leave 11.8 million more Americans without health insurance.

Republicans also earmarked roughly $350 billion for national-security projects, including development of a domestic “Golden Dome” missile-defence system and expanded deportation operations. Democrats condemned the package as a giveaway to the wealthy that undercuts the social safety net; House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries staged an 8 hour 44 minute speech—the longest in chamber history—to protest what he called an “all-out assault” on working families.

The Senate cleared the bill earlier this week with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. Once signed, the legislation will mark the most sweeping fiscal overhaul of Trump’s second term and set the stage for partisan clashes in the 2026 midterm campaigns.
