House Republicans early Thursday advanced President Donald Trump’s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill,” approving a 219–213 procedural motion that clears the way for a final vote on the legislation as soon as later in the day. The overnight roll call, held open for seven hours to win over holdouts, followed an intense round of negotiations led by Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson aimed at unifying the party’s narrow 220–212 majority.

The 800-page package would extend and expand the 2017 tax cuts, delivering $4.5 trillion in breaks over the next decade while pairing them with $1.2 trillion in reductions to Medicaid and food-assistance programs. It also steers roughly $350 billion toward border enforcement and other national-security initiatives and lets workers deduct tips and overtime pay. Medicaid recipients deemed able-bodied would have to work at least 80 hours a month beginning in late 2026.

Democrats are unanimously opposed, calling the measure a giveaway to the wealthy that shifts costs to states and low-income households. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office projects it would widen the federal deficit by $3.3 trillion and leave nearly 12 million more Americans without health insurance.

The Senate approved the bill earlier this week on the narrowest possible margin, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. Any House amendments would force another Senate vote, so Republican leaders are pressing to pass the bill unchanged and send it to Trump’s desk before his self-imposed July 4 deadline.
