During a contentious House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing, Democratic Representatives Lauren Underwood and Veronica Escobar challenged Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on the Trump administration's deportation policies. Underwood questioned whether the U.S. government has the authority to deport American citizens, to which Noem responded that the government does not deport U.S. citizens. However, Underwood claimed that several American citizens have been deported.
Escobar accused Noem of deporting American citizen children, including a child undergoing cancer treatment, without allowing parents to sign legally required ICE forms or consult with lawyers. Noem countered these accusations by stating that in the specific cases mentioned, it was the parents' choice to take their children with them, aligning with the administration's policy to keep families together.
The hearing also touched on broader issues of the administration's immigration enforcement, with Noem noting that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is partnering with 598 agencies and departments under the 287g program to assist in deportation efforts. Noem expressed interest in expanding these agreements further. Additionally, Rep. Tony Gonzales highlighted that last year, data from the Biden administration confirmed over 662,000 illegal criminal aliens on ICE’s docket, a number Noem believes to be higher.
Amidst these discussions, a Venezuelan mother, Yorley Inciarte, who was deported without her 2-year-old daughter, accused the U.S. government of 'kidnapping' her child. A Cuban mother was also reported to have been deported, separated from her American husband and 17-month-old daughter.
.@RepEscobar once again gets owned by @Sec_Noem for pushing Fake News:
Rep. Escobar: "I also wanted to ask you about this NBC News story: U.S. citizen family traumatized after ICE raided their Oklahoma home."
Sec. Noem: "That house was being used for human smuggling." https://t.co/VvpU0k0Zbj
BREAKING: Last year, I received data from the Biden administration confirming over 662,000 illegal criminal aliens on ICE’s docket.
@Sec_Noem believes we have more than that.
