President Donald Trump on Thursday withdrew the nomination of conservative activist Ed Martin to serve as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia after several Republican senators signaled they would oppose the pick. Martin, who has no prosecutorial background and has voiced support for participants in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, faced early resistance led by Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina. Trump told reporters and the Daily Caller that Martin “wasn’t getting the support” required for Senate confirmation and said the lawyer would instead be brought into the Justice Department. According to the president, Martin will assume multiple roles, including associate deputy attorney general, head of a newly formed Weaponization Working Group and U.S. pardon attorney. To fill the vacancy in Washington, the president said he will nominate Jeanine Pirro, a Fox News host and former Westchester County, New York district attorney and judge. Fox News confirmed Pirro will leave the network, praising her 14-year tenure. The White House plans to send her nomination to the Senate within days. If confirmed, Pirro would become the top federal prosecutor in the nation’s capital, a post that oversees some of the Justice Department’s most politically sensitive investigations. Her selection follows a string of media personalities moving into administration roles and sets the stage for a new confirmation battle on Capitol Hill.
