President Donald Trump on May 8 appointed Fox News host and former New York prosecutor Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, replacing Ed Martin after his nomination to the post faltered in the Senate.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump called Pirro “incredibly well qualified for this position” and “in a class by herself,” citing her years as Westchester County district attorney and her tenure as a judge. Fox News said Pirro will leave the network, where she co-hosts “The Five,” after a 14-year run on its air.

Martin, whose confirmation faced insufficient Republican support, will shift to the Justice Department as director of the newly established Weaponization Working Group, associate deputy attorney general and pardon attorney, according to the president.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Washington handles many of the federal government’s highest-profile public-corruption and national-security cases. Pirro will serve in an acting capacity while the administration prepares a formal nomination that would require Senate confirmation.
