The Trump administration has initiated a series of major federal workforce reductions, including a significant restructuring of the National Security Council (NSC), large-scale layoffs at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the termination of AmeriCorps service workers.

At the NSC, the White House is reducing staff numbers from a previous total of approximately 395, reassigning career government employees to their original agencies and ousting some political appointees. The overhaul follows the recent removal of National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio now serving as national security adviser. Andy Baker and Robert Gabriel have been named as deputy national security advisers. Many NSC aides have been sent home as part of the changes.

The Department of Veterans Affairs, the government’s second-largest agency, is set to lose 83,000 employees under the administration’s cutbacks. Lawmakers have raised concerns that these reductions will impact the more than 9 million veterans who rely on the VA for health care, mental health and suicide prevention, housing, and other services.

Additionally, more than 32,000 low-paid AmeriCorps service workers were terminated in April as part of sweeping budget cuts. The AmeriCorps layoffs went largely unnoticed, and Congressional rescissions intended to address spending have not been passed.
