US and India Poised to Seal Interim Trade Deal Before July 9 Tariff Deadline

The United States and India are nearing completion of an interim trade agreement, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying on 30 June that the public will “hear about the trade deal very soon” as negotiators finalise the text in Washington.

The Financial Times and Reuters, citing people briefed on the talks, report that New Delhi wants the pact sealed this week—possibly within 48 hours—to head off President Donald Trump’s threatened 26 percent “reciprocal” tariffs on Indian goods, which are set to take effect on 9 July after a 90-day pause.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the package would see the United States suspend or reduce some duties in exchange for limited new access to India’s markets for products such as pecans, walnuts and select farm goods, while leaving India’s heavily protected dairy and staple agriculture sectors largely untouched. India is pressing for concessions on labour-intensive exports, along with provisions covering digital trade, customs procedures and supply-chain resilience.

Negotiators have resolved most technical issues, and the deal now awaits political sign-off from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump. The accord is expected to serve as the first tranche of a broader bilateral trade agreement the two sides aim to finish by the autumn, ultimately targeting a doubling of annual commerce to roughly $500 billion by 2030.
