US Bill Lets Trump Arm Israel With B-2 Bombers if Iran Restarts Nuclear Program

Two U.S. House members—Democrat Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and Republican Mike Lawler of New York—have introduced the “Bunker Buster Act,” legislation that would authorize President Donald Trump to transfer B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and 30,000-pound GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs to Israel if Iran is found to be reviving its nuclear-weapons program.

Under the proposal, the president could supply the aircraft, munitions, training and support needed for Israel to strike heavily fortified underground facilities should Tehran resume weapons-grade enrichment. The U.S. Air Force operates only 19 B-2s and has never shared the platform or the deep-penetration bombs with an ally.

The bill’s sponsors say the measure is meant to reinforce deterrence after U.S. and Israeli raids last month damaged centrifuge halls at Iran’s Fordow plant and other sites. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi has cautioned that Iran could restore enrichment cascades “within months,” a warning the lawmakers cite in pressing for rapid Israeli access to the weapons.

The bipartisan measure was filed in the House on 2 July and awaits committee referral and subsequent votes in both chambers of Congress.
