Trump Sets Aug. 1 Start Date for Tariffs Up to 70%

U.S. President Donald Trump said countries that export goods to the United States will begin paying new punitive tariffs on 1 August, ending months of temporary waivers granted while bilateral trade talks continued. He told reporters that letters detailing the specific levies will be dispatched as early as Friday to the first group of about 10–12 nations.

The duties will vary widely, from roughly 10% to as high as 70%, depending on each country’s trade balance with the United States. Trump’s move revives the tariff package he unveiled in April, which he had suspended to allow time for negotiations. So far, Washington has announced separate deals only with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, leaving most trading partners—ranging from Taiwan to members of the European Union—facing higher border taxes unless new agreements are reached before the August deadline.
