U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that negotiators are “close” to securing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and that an agreement could be reached “within the next week.”
Trump made the remarks to reporters in the Oval Office during a ceremony celebrating a separate peace accord between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. He said he had just spoken with “some of the people involved,” called the humanitarian situation in Gaza “terrible,” and noted that Washington is supplying money and food to the enclave while urging other nations to step up assistance.
The comments follow a renewed U.S. diplomatic push. Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is expected in Washington for consultations, and administration officials say Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due at the White House on July 7. An eight-week truce brokered by the United States, Qatar and Egypt collapsed in March; the 20-month war has since pushed Gaza’s reported death toll above 56,500, while the Hamas attack of Oct. 7 2023 killed about 1,200 people in Israel.
Neither Trump nor Israeli or Hamas representatives offered details of a prospective deal, and earlier talks have foundered over whether the war should end permanently and over the fate of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Still, Trump said, “we think we’re going to get a ceasefire,” casting the coming week as a potential turning point in the conflict.
