The Pentagon has put a hold on certain shipments of air-defense missiles and other munitions previously pledged to Ukraine, after an internal review concluded U.S. stockpiles of those weapons had fallen to levels deemed too low, according to officials familiar with the decision.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said the pause reflects President Donald Trump’s directive to “put America’s interests first,” adding that the United States “remains unquestioned” in military readiness. The Defense Department did not specify which weapons are affected, but a U.S. official said the items were part of aid packages approved under the prior Biden administration.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has told lawmakers the administration is re-evaluating the scope of U.S. support for Kyiv and pressing European allies to shoulder more of the burden. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Washington has sent more than $66 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
The suspension comes as Russia intensifies aerial bombardments and Ukraine renews calls for additional Patriot air-defense systems. Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at last week’s NATO summit and said Washington may still make some Patriots available, but emphasized competing U.S. requirements, including support for Israel.
