Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved sending an Israeli negotiating team to Doha, Qatar, for indirect talks with Hamas aimed at finalising a U.S-backed cease-fire and hostage-release agreement, according to Israeli officials quoted by Channel 12 and other media outlets. The delegation is expected to leave as early as Saturday night or Sunday.
The discussions will build on a framework that calls for a 60-day halt in fighting, the staged release of around 10 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 18 others, and the liberation of an undisclosed number of Palestinian prisoners, alongside a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza, people familiar with the proposal said. Hamas told mediators in Qatar and Egypt that it had delivered a "positive" response and was ready to start talks immediately.
The renewed diplomacy comes nearly 21 months into the Gaza war that began after Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack, which killed about 1,200 people in Israel and led to 251 abductions. Gaza’s health ministry says Israel’s subsequent offensive has left more than 57,000 Palestinians dead. Netanyahu is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, where the cease-fire efforts are expected to feature prominently.
