IAEA Pulls Inspectors from Iran After Tehran Suspends Cooperation

Iran has halted formal cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency after President Masoud Pezeshkian enacted a parliament-approved law that suspends access for UN nuclear inspectors. The agency said on 2 July it was aware of Tehran’s intention but had yet to receive official clarification.

Two days later, on 4 July, the IAEA withdrew all remaining inspectors from Iran, moving them overland to Vienna because of security concerns. The pullout ends on-site verification of a programme that last year was visited almost daily and leaves the agency unable to track roughly 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, according to IAEA data cited by diplomats.

UN secretary-general spokesman Stephane Dujarric described Iran’s suspension of cooperation as “obviously concerning,” while US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce called the decision “unacceptable” and urged Tehran to reverse course. Western governments warned that the absence of inspectors undermines visibility into Iran’s nuclear activities at a moment of heightened regional tension.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said it is of “crucial importance” that talks resume quickly to restore monitoring and verification. The standoff follows US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in mid-June and a new Iranian law that could criminalise foreign inspections, signalling a deepening rift over the future of Tehran’s atomic programme.
