President Donald Trump on Friday urged the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate alleged fraud in the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden, reviving claims that the contest was “a total FRAUD” with “MASSIVE and OVERWHELMING” evidence. In a Truth Social post, the president said such an inquiry “cannot be allowed to happen again,” without specifying whom he wants to lead it or what new evidence might be presented.
Trump’s demand reopens a dispute largely settled in the courts and by federal agencies. More than 60 election-related lawsuits filed by his allies were dismissed after the 2020 vote, and then-Attorney General Bill Barr said the Justice Department found no irregularities that could have altered the result. The Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity agency likewise called the election the most secure in U.S. history.
The Department of Justice declined to comment on Trump’s call, and Attorney General Pam Bondi has not indicated whether she will pursue a special-counsel appointment. Trump’s latest move underscores his continuing effort to cast doubt on Biden’s victory even as he begins the second year of his own new term, potentially complicating the administration’s legislative agenda and ongoing investigations that already involve special counsels on both parties.
