The Trump administration said on 13 May that eight federal agencies will terminate an additional $450 million in grants to Harvard University, accusing the Ivy League institution of failing to confront antisemitism and racial discrimination on its campus.
The action follows last week’s decision to freeze $2.2 billion in federal funds, bringing the total withheld from Harvard to roughly $2.65 billion. Programs overseen by the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Defense are among those affected, the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism said.
In a letter to Harvard, the task force cited the university’s "repeated failure" to curb antisemitic harassment, pointing to a $65,000 Harvard Law Review fellowship granted to a protester charged with assaulting a Jewish student. Officials have also warned that Harvard’s tax-exempt status could come under review.
Harvard responded by expanding a federal lawsuit that seeks to block the funding suspensions, arguing that the government is overstepping its authority and infringing on academic freedom. The university said the loss of federal support threatens research projects and student aid, and it plans to request an injunction to restore the grants.
The dispute intensifies a broader clash between the Trump administration and leading universities over campus speech and discrimination policies. While Harvard’s endowment stood at $60.7 billion as of June 2024, the institution relies heavily on federal money for research in fields ranging from medicine to national security.
