Trump Opens Antisemitism Probe at UW as NYPD Arrests About 80 in Columbia Library Protest

Seattle police arrested roughly 30 pro-Palestinian demonstrators late Monday after the group occupied and vandalised an engineering building at the University of Washington. University officials estimate the overnight protest caused more than $1 million in damage. On Wednesday the school said 21 students involved had been suspended and barred from all UW campuses while the incident is investigated. The Trump administration’s Antisemitism Task Force opened a federal civil-rights inquiry into the University of Washington one day after the unrest, citing complaints of anti-Jewish intimidation during the occupation. Additional federal agencies are reviewing the episode as part of a broader crackdown on campus antisemitism, officials said. In a separate confrontation on Wednesday, more than 100 masked protesters forced their way into Columbia University’s Butler Library during final-examination week, chanting in support of Palestinians and clashing with campus security. Two Public Safety officers were injured, leading the university to request assistance from the New York Police Department. NYPD officers entered the library and, after several hours, removed and arrested about 70-80 demonstrators on trespass and related charges. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later said the government is reviewing the visa status of foreign nationals among those detained. The back-to-back incidents highlight escalating tensions over the Gaza war on U.S. campuses and the federal government’s willingness to intervene.
