Texas Floods Kill 27 as Abbott Seeks Federal Disaster Aid

Flash flooding along the Guadalupe River in Texas Hill Country killed at least 27 people, including nine children, and left more than 20 others missing, local officials said on Saturday. Many of the missing are girls who were attending Camp Mystic near Hunt after water levels reportedly climbed about 26 feet in less than an hour, sweeping away cabins, homes and vehicles.

Governor Greg Abbott expanded his state disaster declaration to additional central-Texas counties and formally asked President Donald Trump for a federal disaster declaration, which would unlock Federal Emergency Management Agency funding for rescue and recovery work.

Trump called the floods “shocking” and said Washington “will take care of it,” dispatching Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to coordinate federal efforts already under way. The U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies have evacuated roughly 850 residents by air and water, while forecasters warn that more heavy rain this weekend could hamper the search for survivors.
