Senate Democrats Block GOP Bid to Tighten Medicaid Rules on Immigration

Senate Republicans said a series of amendments they introduced on 30 June were voted down by the Democratic majority during debate over an unspecified health-care measure. The blocked proposals sought to add restrictions to Medicaid and, in one case, to steer additional federal money to Alaska.

Sen. Dan Sullivan’s amendment would have increased Medicaid reimbursements for Alaska, while Sen. John Cornyn’s measure proposed withholding funds from states that provide Medicaid coverage to undocumented immigrants convicted or charged with serious crimes. Sen. Marsha Blackburn offered language she said would close a loophole that allows what she called 1.4 million undocumented immigrants to remain on the program.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats opposed the amendments, according to the Republican sponsors, who accused Democrats of prioritizing benefits for undocumented immigrants over support for senior citizens and other vulnerable Americans. Democrats did not immediately respond publicly to the claims after the floor votes.
