Philadelphia launched its Pride Month festivities with the unfurling of a 600-foot Progress Pride Rainbow Flag at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The flag, which has grown by 200 feet each year for three years, now spans a block and a half. Dozens of participants carried the flag down the museum steps.
The Pride flag was also marched through Main Street in Manayunk and hoisted at City Hall in a ceremony led by the city's Office of LGBT Affairs, with Mayor Cherelle Parker and city councilmembers in attendance. Philly Pride 365, led by Executive Producer Jeremy Williams and several local groups, organized the events to promote inclusivity and acceptance throughout the city.
This year's Pride celebrations take place amid ongoing concerns about LGBTQ rights. City leaders, including Councilmember Rue Landau, Philadelphia's first openly gay councilmember, emphasized the importance of maintaining and advancing these rights. Mayor Parker called for a renewed commitment to making Philadelphia a place where everyone feels safe, accepted, and celebrated.
