Pentagon Deploys 200 Marines to Florida to Back ICE

The U.S. Department of Defense said on Thursday it will send about 200 Marines to Florida to provide administrative and logistical assistance to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The troops, drawn from units under U.S. Northern Command, will work inside ICE facilities and are barred from direct contact with detainees or any law-enforcement activities, the command said in a statement.

The Marines represent the first wave of a Pentagon authorization issued last month allowing the mobilization of up to 700 service members to bolster ICE operations in Florida, Louisiana and Texas. Defense officials stressed that the personnel will focus on paperwork, transportation and other support functions aimed at freeing ICE agents for field duties.

Thursday’s order extends the Trump administration’s growing use of military resources in immigration enforcement. In June, roughly 700 Marines were deployed to Los Angeles to safeguard agents during raids targeting people in the country illegally. The latest deployment underscores the administration’s effort to accelerate removals while keeping uniformed troops in strictly auxiliary roles.
