Newark Mayor Ras Baraka Arrested on Trespass Charge at ICE Detention Protest

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was taken into federal custody on Friday after refusing to leave the Delaney Hall Detention Center, a facility the Biden administration is converting into an immigration detention site. Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba said the mayor committed criminal trespass when he crossed onto the federally controlled property and ignored repeated instructions to depart. The Department of Homeland Security said the incident began when a group of protesters, flanked by Democratic U.S. Representatives Robert Menendez Jr. and Bonnie Watson Coleman, moved through an open security gate behind an incoming detainee bus and demanded an unplanned “oversight” tour. The lawmakers were escorted out without incident, but Baraka remained on the grounds and was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations agents. Baraka, a Democrat who recently announced a run for governor, has criticized the expansion of immigration detention in Newark and spent the week rallying against the center’s opening. Federal prosecutors said formal charges will be filed and emphasized that “no one is above the law.” Representatives for the mayor and the two House members did not immediately comment on the arrest.
