Musk Launches America Party After Trump Threatens DOGE Clampdown

Elon Musk has escalated his confrontation with President Donald Trump over the administration’s nearly US$1 trillion tax-and-spending package, calling the measure a "disgusting abomination" that will "destroy millions of jobs." The Tesla and SpaceX chief warned Senate Republicans on 29 June that backing the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” would be “political suicide,” and he vowed to bankroll primary challenges against lawmakers who vote for it.

After the Senate advanced the 1,000-page bill on 1 July, Trump struck back. The president said he might instruct the Department of Government Efficiency—DOGE, the agency Musk led until May—to examine and potentially strip federal subsidies and contracts from Musk’s companies. Trump, who also mused about deporting the South-African-born billionaire, argued that cutting the support would save "a fortune."

Musk responded by intensifying threats to create an alternative political force. Following a poll he posted on X that showed 65 percent of more than one million respondents favoring a new party, the billionaire announced on 5 July that "the America Party is formed." He said the group will target a handful of House and Senate races in 2026 to unseat Republicans who supported the bill, which the Congressional Budget Office projects will swell U.S. debt by US$4 trillion through 2034.

The White House has not commented on Musk’s new party, but senior Republicans have privately expressed concern that a well-funded third-party effort could complicate efforts to defend their slim congressional majorities. Musk’s move underscores the deepening rift between two former allies whose relationship helped shape Trump’s first six months in office but has now turned into one of Washington’s most closely watched political feuds.
