DHS Ends Haiti TPS, Putting 500,000 Migrants at Risk of Deportation

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Friday it will terminate Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, ending deportation relief and work permits for an estimated 520,000 people. The current designation will lapse on Aug. 3, with full termination taking effect on Sept. 2, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced.

Noem said a review concluded that "country conditions have improved" and that extending the program is "no longer compatible with U.S. national interests." Haitian TPS holders are being urged to seek other legal avenues or arrange voluntary departure through the CBP Home mobile application; officials said DHS will provide complimentary flights and a $1,000 travel stipend for those who leave before the deadline.

The decision accelerates by 18 months an extension granted by former President Joe Biden and marks the latest step in President Donald Trump’s broader rollback of humanitarian protections. Earlier this year the Supreme Court allowed the administration to proceed with ending TPS for Venezuelans—a precedent lawyers expect to test in the Haitian case. Advocacy groups contend that rampant gang violence and political instability still make Haiti unsafe, while the U.S. State Department continues to advise Americans against travel to the country.
