Canadian Citizen Johnny Noviello, 49, Dies in ICE Custody in Miami While Awaiting Deportation; Cause Under Investigation

Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old Canadian citizen and lawful permanent resident of the United States since 1991, died on June 23 while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Federal Detention Center in Miami, Florida. Noviello, who had lived in the U.S. since childhood and resided in Daytona Beach, was awaiting deportation following convictions for racketeering and drug trafficking in 2023.

He was found unresponsive at the detention facility and was pronounced dead shortly after medical staff attempted resuscitation. The cause of death remains under investigation. Canadian officials, including Foreign Minister Anita Anand, have urged the U.S. government for more information regarding the circumstances surrounding Noviello's death. This incident marks the eighth death in ICE custody in 2025. Noviello's death has drawn attention to detention conditions and raised concerns from Canadian authorities, who are actively seeking answers about his treatment while detained.
