Flash floods kill more people than any other type of storm in the United States, accounting for an average of 127 deaths a year over the past three decades and 145 fatalities last year, according to the National Weather Service.
The danger was underscored late Friday when a sudden deluge in the Texas Hill Country sent the Guadalupe River surging 26 feet in just 45 minutes after about 10 inches of rain. Authorities have confirmed at least 24 deaths and say more than 20 girls attending a summer camp remain missing. Roughly 230 people were rescued, 160 of them by helicopter, and flood warnings remain in effect for parts of central Texas.
The National Weather Service had issued a flood watch on Thursday, later upgraded to a warning affecting some 30,000 residents. While state officials, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, said precautions were communicated, Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly acknowledged the area lacks a local warning system, leaving many without timely alerts.
Nearly half of all U.S. flood deaths occur in vehicles, and officials are urging drivers to avoid water-covered roads as additional heavy rain is forecast. The episode reinforces federal data that fast-rising floods—often forming within six hours of intense rainfall—remain the nation’s most lethal weather threat.
