An SUV involved in a three-vehicle collision slammed into a strip-mall building on 13400 South and about 5200 West in Herriman, Utah, shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, rupturing a natural-gas line and sparking a powerful explosion and fire that destroyed businesses housing a Domino’s Pizza and a Jimmy John’s.

Herriman and Riverton police said three people were taken to hospital with varying injuries, while two bystanders pulled the SUV’s driver and passenger from the vehicle moments before it was engulfed. No firefighters or law-enforcement personnel were hurt.

More than 60 firefighters from the Unified Fire Authority and neighbouring departments battled the blaze. Authorities ordered residents within roughly a one-mile radius— including Terra Cruz Lane and Parasol Lane— to evacuate amid concerns of an active gas leak. The evacuation was lifted shortly after 1 a.m., but 13400 South remains closed as crews secure the site.

Investigators are examining how the traffic accident led to the gas-line rupture. The blast levelled the impacted building and caused significant damage to adjoining structures; officials have not provided a damage estimate or timetable for reopening the area.
