Savannah Mall Shooting Injures Seven; Police Blame Cross-fire Between Groups

A shooting erupted at the Oglethorpe Mall on Savannah’s south side at about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting a large police and firefighting response and the evacuation of the shopping center.

Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther said three people—two young adults and one juvenile—sustained gunshot wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening. Four other individuals were transported for non-gunshot-related medical issues, bringing the total number of people taken from the scene to seven.

Gunther told local media the gunfire appeared to have involved two groups and did not appear random. Investigators had made no arrests as of late Wednesday night, but officers declared the mall clear and said there was no ongoing threat to shoppers.

Mayor’s office said the city was thankful the injuries were limited, while Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr offered state assistance and noted his office’s recently expanded gang unit in Savannah. Police continue to review security video and interview witnesses as they search for those responsible.
