Mexico claimed its second consecutive and record-extending 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday, defeating the United States 2-1 before more than 70,000 spectators at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The U.S. struck first when defender Chris Richards headed in Sebastian Berhalter’s free-kick in the fourth minute. Mexico levelled in the 27th minute through striker Raúl Jiménez, who turned on a Marcel Ruíz pass and beat goalkeeper Matt Freese. Midfielder Edson Álvarez delivered the winner with a diving header in the 77th minute after Johan Vásquez flicked on a set piece; a VAR review upheld the goal.
The victory gives coach Javier Aguirre’s side back-to-back Gold Cup trophies, making Mexico the first nation to repeat since 2011 and widening its lead over the United States, which remains on seven titles. U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino, overseeing his first tournament final with the national team, was without several regular starters as both rivals now pivot to preparations for the 2026 World Cup they will co-host with Canada.
