Iranian Migrant’s ICE Arrest Tests Pro-Trump Family as Melania Petition Grows

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Arpineh Masihi at her home in Diamond Bar, California, on 30 June, part of a wider federal sweep of Iranian nationals. Masihi, who came to the United States as a refugee at age three, lost her green card about 15 years ago after a theft conviction and has since been seeking to regain legal status. She is now awaiting transfer to another detention facility.
Her husband, Arthu Sahakyan, said he will keep the family’s 'Keep America Great' flag flying and continues to support President Donald Trump. “Trump is not trying to do anything bad,” he told local television, adding that tighter vetting of Iranian nationals is justified because of potential 'sleeper cells.'
Masihi’s detention follows the 21 June U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites and a subsequent Department of Homeland Security bulletin warning that the conflict could inspire attacks inside the United States. Attorney General Pam Bond told Congress that authorities have arrested about 1,500 Iranian nationals, while federal sources said more than 130 were picked up in the days after the strikes.
The stepped-up enforcement has provoked an unusual backlash: an online petition demanding the deportation of First Lady Melania Trump, a naturalised citizen born in Slovenia, has gathered more than 6,500 signatures. Organisers say the move would demonstrate that the administration’s immigration policies apply equally, without exceptions for the president’s family.
