Idaho authorities have identified 20-year-old Wess Roley as the gunman who fatally shot two firefighters and wounded a third after allegedly setting a brush fire on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene on 29 June. Roley was found dead with a weapon nearby, and investigators believe he acted alone.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said evidence indicates the fire was lit to lure responders into an ambush. “These firefighters did not have a chance,” he told reporters. The injured firefighter underwent surgery and is in stable condition, while the names of the victims have not yet been released.
The blaze, dubbed the Nettleton Gulch Fire, has burned roughly 26 acres but has not damaged structures. Fire crews were initially kept from the area while about 300 law-enforcement officers searched rugged terrain and exchanged gunfire with the suspect before confirming his death.
Governor Brad Little ordered state flags flown at half-staff and pledged support for the victims’ families. Investigators are examining Roley’s background and motives; unverified reports about his birthplace remain under review.
