A 5-year-old girl fell overboard from Deck 4 of Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream at about 11:30 a.m. on 29 June while the vessel was sailing from the Bahamas back to Port Everglades, Florida. Her father immediately jumped into the Atlantic to reach her.
Crew members launched a rescue tender and recovered the pair roughly 20 minutes later, eyewitnesses and the company said. Both guests were returned to the ship, examined by medical staff and later transported to a local hospital after the vessel docked early Monday.
Security video reviewed by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office shows the child lost her balance while sitting on a railing and fell backward through a porthole about 45 ft above the water. Investigators said the 37-year-old father was not holding the girl at the time, countering online speculation.
Disney Cruise Line commended its crew for “exceptional skills and prompt actions,” saying the incident highlights its man-overboard training and safety protocols. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate but said no foul play is suspected.
