A fireworks warehouse operated by Devastating Pyrotechnics exploded at about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday in the rural community of Esparto, 40 miles northwest of Sacramento. The blast sent a fireball and debris hundreds of feet into the air, rattled nearby homes and triggered a series of smaller detonations as stored pyrotechnics ignited.
Authorities said two people were injured in the initial blast. Seven others were reported missing; Yolo County officials confirmed over the weekend that human remains for all seven had been recovered from the rubble. Autopsies and DNA tests are under way to confirm identities.
The explosion set off a wildfire that burned roughly 78 acres of farmland, collapsed the warehouse and forced mandatory evacuations within a one-mile radius. About 150 homes and farms temporarily lost power, and local Independence Day celebrations were cancelled while crews secured the area and carried out controlled detonations of unexploded fireworks.
Preliminary findings show the facility held commercial display fireworks but lacked a local permit to store them. The property belongs to Yolo County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Sam Machado, whose house was destroyed in the incident. Cal Fire, the State Fire Marshal and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the cause of the blast and whether regulatory violations contributed to one of California’s deadliest fireworks accidents in decades.
