Russian President Vladimir Putin said early Sunday that Moscow is prepared to hold direct peace talks with Ukraine and proposed meeting his Ukrainian counterpart in Istanbul on 15 May. The overture is the most explicit call from the Kremlin for face-to-face negotiations since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the proposal but made participation conditional on a verifiable, nationwide ceasefire. The Kremlin has not publicly endorsed Zelenskyy’s truce timetable, leaving uncertainty over whether Thursday’s talks will go ahead. Diplomatic efforts now hinge on Russia’s response to the ceasefire condition in the coming days.
