Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his 4 July phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump was the “best and most productive” they have held, highlighting discussions on bolstering Ukraine’s air defences with Patriot missile systems as Russian attacks intensify.
Zelensky told Ukrainians in his nightly video address that Patriot batteries are “the key to protection against ballistic threats” and that teams from both governments will refine the details in upcoming meetings. Trump, speaking separately to reporters, said Ukraine is “being hit pretty hard” and will “need” the U.S.-made system, adding that he was “very unhappy” with an earlier call to Russian President Vladimir Putin because Moscow showed no interest in a cease-fire.
The leaders’ phone call followed their 25 June meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in The Hague, which lasted about 50 minutes and focused on achieving a cease-fire and a “real peace,” according to Zelensky. Since then, Kyiv has reported the largest drone assault of the 40-month-old war, underscoring Ukraine’s urgency for additional air-defence capabilities.
