Trump and Zelensky Agree to Strengthen Ukraine Air Defences After Record Strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed in a 40-minute telephone call on July 4 to work together to reinforce Ukraine’s air-defence network. The two leaders will task expert teams with identifying systems that can be supplied or jointly produced to “protect the sky,” Zelensky wrote after the conversation.

According to the Ukrainian leader, the discussion also covered expanding joint defence production—particularly drones—and ways to attract investment into the sector. Kyiv has repeatedly sought additional Patriot batteries and other interceptors as it faces intensifying Russian strikes.

The call came hours after Russia launched what Ukrainian officials described as its largest drone-and-missile assault on Kyiv since the war began, wounding at least 23 civilians and igniting dozens of fires across the capital. The escalation coincided with Washington’s decision to pause deliveries of some Patriot interceptor missiles, a move Zelensky warned could weaken Ukraine’s defences.

Trump’s outreach follows his conversation a day earlier with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he later said produced no progress toward a cease-fire. Zelensky welcomed continued U.S. engagement, saying Ukraine supports “every effort” aimed at achieving a durable and just peace while bolstering its immediate security needs.
