In a series of coordinated attacks spanning from March 30 to April 1, 2024, Russian forces launched a significant offensive against Ukraine, targeting both military and critical infrastructure across various regions. The Ukrainian 59th Motorized Brigade successfully destroyed a Russian 152mm self-propelled artillery unit in the Donetsk region using an FPV drone. Concurrently, Ukraine's energy infrastructure suffered extensive damage due to Russian aggression. Ukraine, pre-war, produced 58,200 MW of electricity, but between February 2022 and February 2024, it lost 14,232 MW of power as Russia captured or destroyed multiple power plants. In March alone, attacks damaged or completely destroyed 80% of the thermal generating capacity of DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company. The Zmiiv Thermal Power Plant in the Kharkiv region was completely destroyed following Russian shelling, significantly impacting the energy supply in eastern Ukraine. Additionally, Russian forces conducted a barrage of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, including 38 missiles, 75 airstrikes, and 98 attacks from multiple rocket launchers in a single 24-hour period. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that out of 99 missiles and drones fired, 84 were intercepted. These attacks targeted not only military positions but also civilian infrastructure, causing power outages in several cities including Odessa and Kharkiv, and damaging residential areas in Kharkiv Oblast. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting a majority of the missiles and drones, but the onslaught has left Ukraine's energy system severely compromised, though not on the brink of collapse. Ukrainian forces responded with their own drone strikes against Russian military equipment and personnel, showcasing a continued resistance against the Russian offensive.
