Recent Russian military operations have significantly impacted Ukraine's energy sector, with a series of attacks targeting the country's thermal power plants (TPPs). One of the TPPs was showcased in various reports, highlighting the extent of the destruction caused by a Russian missile. These assaults have resulted in the loss of more than 20% of Ukraine's total power generation capacity, a figure that adds to previous damages, including the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) by Russian forces, which alone constituted 15% of Ukraine's energy production. The largest private energy company in Ukraine, DTEK, reported that five out of six of its thermal power plants suffered serious damage, leading to an 80% reduction in generating capacity. These attacks occurred on March 22 and March 29, marking a significant escalation in the conflict's impact on civilian infrastructure.
