Russia Unleashes Record Drone Barrage on Kyiv After Trump-Putin Call

Russia launched the largest aerial assault of its three-year war against Ukraine overnight, sending about 539 Shahed-type drones and 11 missiles toward Kyiv on 4 July, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. The hours-long barrage began soon after U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin that White House officials said produced no progress toward a cease-fire.

Kyiv’s military administration said one person was found dead in the rubble and at least 23 were wounded. Debris and explosions damaged roughly 40 apartment blocks, passenger-rail infrastructure, five schools and kindergartens, as well as cars across six of the capital’s 10 districts. The consular section of Poland’s embassy was also hit, though no diplomatic staff were injured, officials added.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting 478 of the incoming drones and missiles, yet falling debris ignited multiple fires and forced thousands of residents to shelter in underground metro stations through the night. The scale of the strike surpassed a record set only a week earlier and underlined Russia’s growing reliance on mass drone attacks manufactured from Iranian designs.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the assault as “deliberately massive and cynical” and, in a subsequent call with President Trump, pressed for additional air-defense systems and tougher sanctions on Moscow. The attack came as Washington has paused some weapons deliveries because of stockpile concerns, prompting European allies to explore stop-gap purchases of Patriot batteries and other defenses for Kyiv.
