Reports have emerged of Russia kidnapping and deporting children from Ukrainian families, with allegations of the children being subjected to re-education and surveillance measures. The Russian government is reportedly investing millions of dollars in these efforts, amid fears of the deported Ukrainian children. An investigation by meduzaproject revealed that five Ukrainian children, illegally adopted by Russians from the occupied Kherson and Luhansk regions, died in the first half of 2023, with one case of suicide noted. Meanwhile, efforts to return these children to Ukraine have seen success, with a family of five children and an 18-year-old orphan being returned from the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson Oblast to territory controlled by Ukraine. The total number of deported Ukrainian children is estimated to be around 20,000.
