Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump in a nearly hour-long phone call on 3 July that Moscow will not step back from its objectives in Ukraine, according to Kremlin foreign-policy adviser Yuri Ushakov. Putin said Russia still seeks a political solution and is ready to continue negotiations with Kyiv, but insisted that the campaign’s original aims—described as removing the “root causes” of the conflict—remain unchanged.
Ushakov said Trump again pressed for a swift end to the fighting. Putin briefed him on a recent exchange of prisoners of war and dead soldiers between Russia and Ukraine and reiterated Russia’s willingness to keep talks with Kyiv going. The leaders also discussed the situation in Iran and the broader Middle East, with both sides emphasising diplomatic approaches, the Kremlin aide added.
The conversation, the sixth disclosed call between the two presidents since Trump returned to the White House, ended without any concrete plan for a face-to-face meeting but with an agreement to maintain contact. Ushakov said the two men did not discuss Washington’s recent suspension of certain U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine.
