NATO has signed a 1.1 billion euro ($1.2 billion) contract through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency for the procurement of 155mm artillery ammunition, in response to the Ukrainian Armed Forces' 'shell hunger' as articulated by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. The contract, which was signed during a ceremony on 23 January, involves the purchase of approximately 220,000 shells, to be delivered starting in 2025 by manufacturers Nexter and JUNGHANS Defence. This procurement is a reaction to the severe ammunition shortage faced by Ukrainian forces, which has led to a significant decrease in their daily shell usage. Additionally, the EU plans to increase its artillery shell production to 1.3 to 1.4 million units per year by the end of 2024, with the majority earmarked for Ukraine.
