Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has signed a bill on May 28 to suspend Belarus's participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE Treaty). The treaty, which was ratified by Belarus in 1992, established limits on the levels of conventional weapons and equipment, such as tanks, armored fighting vehicles, and artillery, that signatory countries can possess. The suspension, however, does not mean a complete withdrawal from the treaty. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry described the suspension as a 'forced retaliatory step.' The National Legal Internet Portal reported the signing on May 29.
