The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine faces severe safety concerns. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Chief, Rafael Mariano Grossi, warned the UN Security Council that the prospect of a nuclear accident at Zaporizhzhia is 'dangerously close.' All seven pillars of nuclear safety and security at the plant have been fully or partially compromised, according to Grossi. Despite the dire situation, Moscow does not plan to decommission the facility and aims to restart it at some point. However, UN monitors have noted that Russia recognizes it would be unsafe to restart the plant now. Issues related to staffing, inspections, system maintenance, and reliability of supply chains have further exacerbated the instability at the site. Grossi made these remarks on June 3 to the IAEA board.
