The European Union has significantly accelerated its production of artillery ammunition, aiming to match Russia's capacity by 2025. According to Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Europe produced 500,000 shells annually in March 2023, which was already higher than the 300,000 produced by the United States. By early 2024, Europe's production capacity had doubled to 1 million shells per year. Breton announced that Europe will produce 1.7 million large calibre artillery shells by the end of 2024, with a goal to reach 2.5 million by the end of 2025 and more than 2 million next year. This increase in production is part of the EU's strategy to enhance its defense capabilities in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and to catch up with Russia's production levels. Breton made these remarks in an interview with La Tribune.
