Former U.S. President Joe Biden used his first broadcast interview since leaving office to accuse President Donald Trump of pursuing “modern-day appeasement” toward Russia. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on 7 May, Biden said Trump’s reported pressure on Kyiv to surrender territory in the ongoing war amounted to rewarding aggression. Biden argued that allowing Moscow to keep occupied Ukrainian land would only embolden President Vladimir Putin. “If we allow a dictator, a thug, to take significant portions of land that aren’t his and think that’s going to satisfy him—I don’t understand,” he said, adding that anyone who believes Putin would stop after such concessions is “foolish and naïve.” Warning that the collapse of NATO “would change the modern history of the world,” Biden said U.S. credibility is at stake in Ukraine and criticised Trump’s foreign-policy rhetoric as “not who we are” as a country. He portrayed firm support for Kyiv as essential to deterring further Russian expansion. The 82-year-old also defended his late decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, telling the BBC the timing “would not have made much difference,” though he acknowledged the move had been difficult.
